The Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program

WHAT IS THE  Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program? The Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program is a part of the Watervliet Wind Warriors Radio Control Model Airplane Club and is sponsored in partnership with the City of Watervliet Department of Parks and Cultural Affairs.

THE PURPOSE AND MISSION of the Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program is to introduce young people to the world of aviation through education and hands on experience with Radio Control Aircraft. The program is conducted to honor the memory of our good friend and mentor Tom Brown who loved introducing others to the world of aviation.

THE  PROGRAM  consists of  a three hour class every Saturday for six weeks.  Forty Five minutes of the class is dedicated to actual classroom instruction ranging from aerodynamics, how weather effects full scale flight, and R/C flying fundamentals & Safety etc.  The rest of the class time is dedicated to Radio Controlled Simulator`s as well as flying actual Radio Controlled Aircraft.  The Spring Program is a beginner program for fifteen students, where they learn the basics of aviation and basic radio controlled aircraft, as well as a field trip to the Albany Airport.  In the fall we invite the graduating class back to better their skills, and knowledge in an intermediate program.  The students learn more in depth about the world of aviation, as well as learning more advanced radio controlled flight.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS  It is a privilege to be part of a program such as the Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program. We ask for the cooperation of the parents to see that their child is at the DOME each Saturday approximately 10 minutes before the starting time and return to pick up children at 12:00 noon. We will attempt to see that we are finished each week at 12:00 noon. The program is designed for your children, however, parents are more than welcome to come and observe any part or all of the program each week.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS  The students are the heart of the program. We will do our best to make sure that the program is educational, interesting, inspiring and fun for you. We ask that each child act in a cooperative and courteous manner with respect for instructors, other students, the building and the equipment.

COST  There is no cost to the parents or children for the program. All expenses are paid by donations to the Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program.

LEADERSHIP  The Tom Brown Youth Aviation Program is presented by members of the Watervliet Wind Warriors, the staff of the City of Watervliet and volunteers from the professional aviation community.
